Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay marked July 18 as the anniversary of the 1967 resolution moved by then Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai in the state Assembly to rename Madras State as Tamil Nadu, a resolution that was passed unanimously.
The Chief Minister said his government would officially celebrate both November 1 — the day Madras State was formed — and July 18, to honour the state's history, culture and linguistic identity.
Extending Tamil Nadu Day greetings, Vijay said the day when the name "Tamil Nadu" was adopted stood for the antiquity, history, culture and linguistic pride of the Tamil people, and paid tribute to freedom fighters and leaders associated with the state's formation.
He reiterated his government's pledge to make Tamil Nadu the leading state in India, pointing to its status as the home of the classical Sangam language and citing equality, social justice, education, technology and skilled human resources as its strengths.
