Chief Minister and TVK president C. Joseph Vijay led a Tamil Nadu government delegation to London this week as part of an investment mission aimed at drawing UK companies to the state.
The delegation signed memoranda of understanding worth around Rs 12,300 crore during the visit. The single largest commitment came from auto component maker Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, which agreed to invest about Rs 11,000 crore in Tamil Nadu over the next five years.
A planned interaction with members of the Tamil diaspora near The Shard in London was cancelled after local police raised concerns about crowd safety, organisers said. Hundreds of overseas Tamils had gathered outside the venue hoping to meet the Chief Minister.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's IT Wing subsequently urged supporters in London not to attempt to meet Vijay or to wait outside his hotel or along his travel routes, citing safety considerations.
The cancellation disappointed many fans who had travelled to see the Chief Minister, even as the government highlighted the investment commitments secured during the trip.
