Greater Chennai Police registered separate criminal cases against DMK deputy general secretary and Nilgiris MP A. Raja and DMK Harbour MLA P.K. Sekar Babu, over remarks they made against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar during the DMK's statewide protests on September 12.
Saidapet police registered a case against Raja after a complaint alleging that his remarks at a protest meeting in Saidapet insulted Nirmal Kumar's parentage and could disturb public peace. Raja had described Vijay as not a "great actor" but a "great scoundrel," and made a personal remark about the minister while criticising Nirmal Kumar's comments on Stalin's detention under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).
Separately, B1 North Beach police registered a case against Sekar Babu, numbered Crime No. 287/2026 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, over a complaint that he used derogatory language describing Vijay as "spineless" and "weak," and referred to the Chief Minister's handling of the Karur stampede, in which 41 people died.
Both cases followed complaints lodged by TVK functionaries. Raja had already withdrawn his remarks about Nirmal Kumar in a post on X on September 13, expressing regret for what he described as an "emotional impulse."
The cases come amid an ongoing war of words between the TVK and DMK stemming from Vijay's September 7 Assembly remarks alleging corruption under past DMK governments, and Nirmal Kumar's subsequent challenge to Stalin over his MISA-era detention.
