The DMK on September 15 postponed its annual "Mupperum Vizha" event, which was scheduled for the evening at Kalaignar Arangam in Anna Arivalayam, Chennai, after party president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was taken ill.
Stalin had been absent earlier in the day from birth anniversary observances for DMK founder C.N. Annadurai in Chennai, which caused concern among party functionaries about his health.
DMK general secretary Durai Murugan announced the postponement of the event and said a fresh date would be communicated later. Party sources said Stalin had been diagnosed with viral fever.
The Mupperum Vizha, or "triple celebration," is among the most important dates on the DMK's annual calendar, marking the birth anniversaries of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and Annadurai, as well as the party's founding.
The party did not release further details of Stalin's condition or say whether he had been advised rest.
