Udhayanidhi signals DMK's dual strategy: sharp ideological opposition, institutional cooperation

The first Assembly session of the new TVK government quickly turned politically charged as DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin made the opposition's position unmistakably clear: the DMK — which secured 59 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections — would be a vigorous, combative opposition on matters of ideology and policy.
Udhayanidhi's intervention in the House reflected a carefully calibrated dual approach. On one hand, he signalled that the DMK would scrutinise the TVK government's performance on key electoral promises — welfare schemes, NEET abolition, economic development — with no quarter given. On the other, he struck a notably conciliatory tone towards CM Vijay personally, praising the Chief Minister for reaching out to leaders across party lines after taking oath.
"That spirit of civility and outreach that Vijay Anna showed after his swearing-in must continue inside this House," Udhayanidhi told the Assembly. The speech drew attention for demonstrating that despite losing power after a decade, the DMK was positioning itself not as a spoiler but as a constructive — if sharp — watchdog of governance in Tamil Nadu.
