The Election Commission of India has scheduled by-elections to two Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies, Madurantakam (SC) and Dharapuram (SC), for October 6. The seats fell vacant after AIADMK legislators Maragatham Kumaravel of Madurantakam and P. Sathyabama of Dharapuram resigned their memberships and joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
On September 9, the AIADMK invited applications from party functionaries wishing to contest the two seats. General secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the constituencies had traditionally been with the AIADMK and that the party would field candidates and win both by-elections.
Palaniswami alleged that the vacancies had been created through defections aimed at shoring up the TVK government, and accused the ruling party and the opposition DMK of spending Assembly time trading charges rather than debating people's issues.
The TVK is expected to field the two former AIADMK MLAs who joined it, while the DMK has begun naming its own candidates for the two constituencies. The BJP is also preparing for the contest.
The by-elections will be the first electoral test for the TVK government since it came to power after the 2026 Assembly election.
