Tamil Nadu Assembly Unanimously Passes Resolutions Opposing NEET and Centre's FCRA Amendment Bill

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on August 11 passed two resolutions in quick succession — one calling for the abolition of NEET for undergraduate medical admissions, and another opposing the Union government's proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026.

The NEET resolution, moved by Minister for Medical Education and Public Health K.G. Arunraj, urged the Centre to abolish the exam and allow Tamil Nadu to admit students to MBBS, BDS and other medical courses based on Class 12 marks. It cited repeated paper leaks and irregularities, including the cancellation and re-conduct of NEET-UG 2026, arguing these had caused distress to lakhs of students and eroded public confidence, and that the exam disproportionately disadvantaged rural, Tamil-medium and economically weaker students.

The resolution was backed by the ruling TVK and its allies, including the Congress, as well as the opposition DMK, the AIADMK and Left parties; the lone BJP MLA in the House staged a walkout in protest.

The second resolution, moved by School Education Minister A. Rajmohan, opposed the Centre's proposed FCRA amendments, citing concerns over their impact on educational institutions, hospitals, elderly care homes and other organisations — particularly minority-run ones — that receive foreign contributions.

Rajmohan specifically objected to provisions that would allow the government to take over, manage, dispose of or sell the assets of charitable organisations in cases involving cancellation, non-renewal, refusal or surrender of FCRA registration, and urged the Centre to withdraw the bill in its present form.

Both resolutions were adopted unanimously by voice vote.
