Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the Periyar Arivulagam and Science Centre in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, on Friday, October 16, after holding a roadshow of about 11.4 km from the airport to the venue along Avinashi Road, where crowds of TVK workers and residents gathered, according to DT Next and other reports.
He also unveiled a statue of Periyar on the campus. The complex stands on seven acres on Dr Nanjappa Road and includes a library with more than one lakh books, a science centre, a digital library and a planetarium. Reports cite a cost of about Rs 300 crore, and differ on the number of storeys.
The project was started under the previous DMK government, and M.K. Stalin had laid the foundation stone. Before the inauguration, Stalin posted a video claiming the project as the work of his government, saying the pride belonged to the DMK forever.
The Chief Minister had planned to travel to Thrissur in Kerala for a Navaratri event afterwards, but heavy rain foiled the helicopter trip, according to reports, and Stalin took a swipe at him over the cancelled visit.
