DMK president M.K. Stalin on September 21 strongly opposed the TVK government's proposal to build a new Secretariat-Assembly complex near the Marina beach, saying a new Secretariat was not needed in a congested locality at the cost of fishermen's livelihoods, and assured his party's full support to the fishing community's protest.

DMK president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday, September 21, strongly opposed the TVK government's proposal to build a new Secretariat-Assembly complex near the Marina beach in Chennai, and warned of a massive protest along with fishermen if the plan was not dropped.
In a statement, Stalin said a new Secretariat was not needed in a congested locality, and that it should not come up by destroying the livelihoods and the neighbourhood of the fishermen who live in the area.
He assured the DMK's full support to the protest of fishermen who oppose the project in their area.
The government's proposal for the complex on Santhome Road at Pattinapakkam has already drawn opposition from AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who earlier this month called the roughly Rs 1,200-crore project unaffordable and unsuitable for a site with fishing hamlets, homes and schools.
