Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on July 29 urged Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to intervene immediately to prevent 152 vacant super-speciality medical seats in the state from being surrendered to the All-India Quota (AIQ).
He cited a Supreme Court order dated May 29 directing that the unfilled super-speciality seats be transferred to the national counselling pool, and alleged that the TVK government had failed to adequately defend Tamil Nadu's position before the apex court during recent hearings on the matter.
Udhayanidhi said the previous DMK government had successfully defended the state's stand at hearings held on April 8, 10 and 16, preventing the seats from being surrendered at the time, but claimed the state's legal approach had weakened since the change of government in May.
He warned that losing the seats would have long-term consequences for Tamil Nadu's healthcare system by reducing opportunities for in-service government doctors to pursue advanced super-speciality training, and called on the Vijay government to take urgent corrective steps.
