Brisk Polling in Madurantakam and Dharapuram Bypolls; Counting on October 9

Polling for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly bypolls in Tamil Nadu was held on Tuesday, October 6, along with the Thattanchavady bypoll in Puducherry. Voting ended at 6 pm, and reports described the turnout as strong.
According to Election Commission figures, Madurantakam recorded 15.99 per cent and Dharapuram 17.55 per cent turnout by 9 am. By 11 am the figures had risen to 35.55 per cent in Madurantakam and 37.28 per cent in Dharapuram. Reports described the voting as brisk, with no untoward incidents.
The two seats fell vacant after the AIADMK MLAs elected from them, Maragatham Kumaravel (Madurantakam) and P. Sathyabama (Dharapuram), resigned and joined the ruling TVK, which has fielded both of them as its candidates. The TVK, DMK, AIADMK, NTK and the Left parties are in the fray.
Votes for both constituencies, along with Thattanchavady, will be counted on October 9. Final polling percentages had not been confirmed in the reports reviewed.
