CM Vijay's Delhi visit: new era in Centre-State relations signalled by PM Modi meeting, but failure to meet Amit Shah raises questions about BJP's political posture

For a politician whom opponents had dismissed as a "celebrity experiment," CM Vijay's tightly-choreographed Delhi itinerary was carefully constructed to underline legitimacy, authority, and national relevance.
The Vijay-Modi meeting signals a new phase in Tamil Nadu's national political role. Vijay's rapid political ascent has redrawn Tamil Nadu's political landscape, long dominated by entrenched Dravidian parties. TVK stunned observers by emerging as the single largest force with 108 seats before successfully forming the government with Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML.
However, the failure to meet Amit Shah — who oversees the Home Ministry — carries political significance. Pending Tamil Nadu-Centre issues including the Vande Mataram protocol, state fiscal claims, and the Sri Lankan fishermen crisis all fall under Home Ministry's purview.
Political observers noted that the Amit Shah meeting not happening may signal the BJP's reluctance to grant political legitimacy to a government it had opposed vigorously during the election campaign — a posture that could complicate resolution of these pending issues.
Despite the gaps, the visit was broadly seen as a success: a PM-level meeting, a Finance Minister memorandum, a Kharge dinner, and the Thiruvalluvar statue inauguration at JNU all contributed to a narrative of a confident, nationally engaged TVK government.
