The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is today witnessing its most consequential session since its first sitting, as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay formally moves a motion of confidence before the full House. The TVK, holding 108 seats of its own, has secured the pledged support of 121 MLAs in total — drawing from alliance partners Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Left parties, alongside a significant rebel faction within the AIADMK.
In a landmark democratic gesture, the proceedings are being telecast live in their entirety for the first time in Tamil Nadu's legislative history. The decision — announced by Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar on the eve of the session — was welcomed by civil society groups and legal observers as a step toward greater transparency. Millions of Tamil Nadu citizens are watching the proceedings on state television and streaming platforms, making this floor test unlike any in the state's post-independence history.
Speaking before moving the motion, CM Vijay addressed the House with characteristic calm: "This confidence motion is not a political formality. It is a public promise — made on the floor of this House, in the full view of every citizen who elected us — that this government will be accountable, transparent, and relentlessly focused on delivering results." The motion is expected to pass comfortably, with several opposition members signalling they may abstain rather than vote against.
