Fulfilling a flagship campaign commitment for social reform, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay today signed a high-impact executive order directing the closure of 717 state-run TASMAC liquor retail outlets across Tamil Nadu within the next two weeks.
The order specifically targets shops located within a 500-metre radius of educational institutions, places of worship, and major bus stands — locations identified as most vulnerable to the social harms of alcohol proximity.
Addressing the press after signing the order, CM Vijay stated, "Public welfare and the safety of our students and devotees come before revenue." He described this as the first phase of a broader, evidence-based strategy to mitigate the social impact of alcohol in the state.
