Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay formally raised the Tamil Thai Vazhthu protocol issue with Prime Minister Modi during their meeting on May 27, escalating the controversy from state politics to national-level diplomatic discourse for the first time.
"Tamil Nadu has consistently upheld the dignity and decorum associated with all national symbols and remains deeply committed to the unity, integrity and constitutional values of India," Vijay stated in his memorandum.
"I would also like to bring to your kind notice the long-established position of Tamil Thai Vazhthu in the public life of Tamil Nadu," Vijay wrote, noting that following a Ministry of Home Affairs order, Lok Bhavan adopted the sequence of Vande Mataram, National Anthem, and thereafter Tamil Thai Vazhthu — reversing the historical order.
CM Vijay requested PM Modi to direct the Home Ministry to issue a clarification that restores the Tamil Thai Vazhthu to its traditional first-position at Tamil Nadu government events.
This represents the first time the Vande Mataram controversy — which had been a major flash point in Tamil Nadu state politics — was formally raised at the Prime Minister's level as a constitutional and cultural rights issue.
