A fresh political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu after Vande Mataram was played before Tamil Thai Vazhthu during the swearing-in ceremony of 23 newly inducted ministers. The DMK attacked the TVK, alleging that the party failed to protect Tamil identity and traditions despite promises.
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai termed the development "unfortunate" and said the controversy persisted even after TVK ministers had reportedly assured that the Tamil anthem would be given preference in official events.
DMK MP Kanimozhi called it an act of disrespecting the state song: "For the second time, the act of singing a third song in a manner that disrespects the Tamil Thai Vazhthu at the swearing-in ceremony of the TVK government's cabinet is deserving of severe condemnation."
MDMK chief Vaiko strongly urged the Tamil Nadu government not to permit Vande Mataram at Tamil Nadu government functions under any circumstances: "The Governor is organising these events, and since they are connected to his office, he has acted in this manner. But I strongly urge the Tamil Nadu government not to permit, under any circumstances, the introduction or singing of this controversial Vande Mataram at Tamil Nadu government functions."
The BJP strongly defended the singing of Vande Mataram first and termed it "national protocol." BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan said: "Nobody can insult Mother Tamil; Mother Tamil always respects nationalism," accusing the DMK of indulging in anti-national politics.
