In a historic ceremony at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 10:24 AM on May 10, 2026. The event drew tens of thousands of supporters alongside national leaders including Rahul Gandhi.
Breaking the 59-year alternating rule between the DMK and AIADMK, Vijay's swearing-in marks the first time a party outside the two dominant Dravidian blocs has led the state government in the modern era.
In his first address, CM Vijay pledged a government of "real secular social justice" and made clear to his cadres that there would be "only one power center" — a signal of disciplined, non-factional governance from day one.
