Leader of the Opposition and DMK Youth Wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin unveiled a statue of veteran CPI leader R. Nallakannu in Chennai on July 29, describing the moment as a lifetime honour.
Udhayanidhi described Nallakannu, who died in 2026 at the age of 101, as a symbol of simplicity and lifelong struggle for people's rights.
"Today, society admires those who make reels, but it does not recognise those who genuinely work for the people," Udhayanidhi said, contrasting what he called the fleeting attention given to social media personalities with the lasting legacy of grassroots activists like Nallakannu.
At the same event, Udhayanidhi also released writer Bagu's book Ammaachi, Karpanaiyin Muthal Aasiriyar.
