Tamil Nadu's ruling TVK will fill its first-ever Rajya Sabha seat — but it is not yet confirmed whether the party will keep it for itself or give it to an alliance partner.
Congress was swift to support TVK when the party lacked a majority post-2026 election, making it the first mover in the coalition. Multiple Congress leaders have pointed to this as justification for getting the seat.
Praveen Chakravarthy — who brokered the Congress-TVK understanding — is the Congress frontrunner. IUML and VCK have also reportedly expressed interest in the seat.
Political analysts note that giving it to Congress makes the most diplomatic sense, given their two ministers in the cabinet and the upcoming June 11 NITI Aayog meeting where CM Vijay may meet Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Kharge.
If TVK gives the seat to Congress, the party's next independent chance to enter Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu will come in 2028 when six members retire.
