Tamil Nadu's ruling TVK is expected to get its first Rajya Sabha berth when the nomination process to fill the vacant seat begins on Monday (June 1). The seat fell vacant after AIADMK leader C. Ve. Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House on May 7, 2026, following his victory in the Mailam Assembly constituency.
Congress is expected to get the seat as part of its understanding with CM Vijay's TVK — the first party to extend support to TVK after the 2026 election results.
Praveen Chakravarthy, chief of the All India Professionals' Congress, is the frontrunner, having played a key role in facilitating the Congress-TVK alliance discussions.
Voting is scheduled for June 18, while the last date for filing nominations is June 8.
TVK, as the single largest party in the state Assembly, is assured of the seat; the only question is whether CM Vijay allocates it to Congress or another ally.
