The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has joined the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu, according to reports published on October 4.
Congress described the move as a historic day for opposition consolidation, saying the INDIA bloc, particularly in Tamil Nadu, is strengthened by the TVK's entry.
The DMK was absent from the meeting that formalised the entry. Reports note that the DMK had rejected a proposal in July to bring the TVK into the bloc, and that the Congress now shares an alliance space with the TVK while its former ally, the DMK, sits outside it.
An analysis in The Week said Vijay and the TVK do not want to rush into the national INDIA bloc. Separately, the bloc is reported to be planning district-level demonstrations across Tamil Nadu against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
