Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) issued a key directive on June 10 stating that all scheduled power outages must be officially announced in advance, with no unannounced supply interruptions permitted in any district across the state.
The directive comes following persistent complaints from consumers, particularly in residential areas, about sudden and frequent power cuts during peak summer months, when demand has risen sharply.
TANGEDCO officials confirmed that peak demand has been managed at the generation level but acknowledged distribution-level challenges, including low-voltage issues in several areas.
CM Vijay's review of TANGEDCO last month had already flagged the low-voltage and unannounced outage issues as priorities for resolution.
The directive effectively holds TANGEDCO divisional offices accountable — any unannounced cut will now be treated as a violation of the board's own compliance standard.
Consumer advocacy groups welcomed the directive but called for a formal grievance mechanism to report violations, which TANGEDCO officials said is being examined.
