The nomination process to fill the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by AIADMK leader C. Ve. Shanmugam — who resigned on May 7 after winning the Mailam Assembly constituency — opens today (June 1).
Nominations can be filed from June 1 to 8; examination of nominations on June 9; last date for withdrawal June 11; poll from 9 am to 4 pm on June 18; counting from 5 pm same day.
Congress has formally sought TVK support and may nominate Praveen Chakravarthy, chief of the All India Professionals' Congress, who was instrumental in brokering the Congress-TVK alliance.
TVK, as the single largest party in the state Assembly, is assured of the seat. If CM Vijay allocates it to Congress, the party's next independent chance to enter Rajya Sabha will come in 2028 when six members retire.
This will be TVK's first-ever Rajya Sabha representation since the party was founded.
