The first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly commenced today with the historic election of TVK's J.C.D. Prabhakar as the Speaker of the House. Prabhakar, who represents the Thousand Lights constituency, was elected unopposed after receiving support from both the ruling TVK coalition and a breakaway faction of the AIADMK.
M. Ravisankar of TVK was concurrently appointed as the Deputy Speaker, completing the constitutional formation of the House leadership.
The day was marked by the formal swearing-in of all 234 newly elected MLAs. The House witnessed a vibrant exchange between the new government and the opposition led by Udhayanidhi Stalin of the DMK, setting the tone for a robust legislative session ahead.
