The DMK's General Executive Council met at Kalaignar Arangam, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai on August 22 to approve a sweeping overhaul of the party's organisational structure following its defeat in the April 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. The meeting was chaired by party president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The council passed resolutions fixing age caps and two-term limits for several tiers of office-bearers: branch secretaries must be 45 or younger and can serve a maximum of two terms; municipal, city and town panchayat ward committee secretaries are capped at 50; town panchayat, area committee and city committee secretaries at 60; and district secretaries at 70, also limited to two terms.
The party also decided to expand its organisational districts to 110, with each new district broadly mapped across two Assembly constituencies, in a move leaders described as an effort to bring in "new blood" and improve localised administration.
Addressing the meeting, Stalin said the DMK had only lost an election and not suffered a permanent defeat, signalling that further structural changes would follow as the party rebuilds after the setback.
