Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired a consultative meeting of Tamil Nadu's Members of Parliament on the proposed Delimitation Bill at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai on August 8, but the session was boycotted by several major parties.
All 30 DMK MPs and all four AIADMK MPs stayed away, joined by one MP each from the PMK, MNM and DMDK, taking the total number of absentee MPs to 37.
The boycotting parties alleged that the TVK-led state government had convened the meeting to shift public attention away from the ongoing Cauvery water-sharing dispute with Karnataka, and argued the session was premature since the BJP-led Union government had given no official indication of introducing a Delimitation Amendment Bill in Parliament.
The meeting went ahead with 19 Tamil Nadu MPs in attendance, including members from the Congress, CPI, CPM, VCK, MDMK and IUML, along with state ministers.
