Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will launch the Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme on September 28, under which every child born in a government hospital in Tamil Nadu will receive a one-gram gold ring, according to an official statement.
The Chief Minister chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat on Friday, September 18, to assess preparations for the launch and implementation of the welfare scheme.
The government said the scheme is intended to strengthen public confidence in government medical services and to honour newborn children, reflecting the traditional role of the maternal uncle, or thaimaman, in Tamil culture.
The statement said the government had accorded high priority to maternal and child healthcare through financial assistance for pregnant women, free delivery and newborn care, emergency obstetric treatment, nutritional support and advance planning for institutional deliveries, with the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation software being used for integrated monitoring of pregnant women and infants.
The scheme was first announced by the Chief Minister in his Independence Day address on August 15, when it was slated to begin on September 15.
