Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday paid rich tributes to former CM and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi on his 103rd birth anniversary, describing him as a towering personality whose influence extended far beyond politics.
"Karunanidhi's knowledge of Tamil, literature, cinema, politics and governance, as well as his vision for State autonomy and the protection of State rights, continue to be remembered and admired," CM Vijay said in a statement.
On behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, Minister Rajmohan paid floral tributes to the portrait of Karunanidhi at the official function.
The TVK government continued the tradition established by the previous DMK government of observing June 3 as "Semmozhi Naal" (Classical Language Day) — honouring Karunanidhi's lifelong advocacy for Tamil's recognition as a classical language.
The tribute from TVK — a rival political formation — is significant and underscores the new government's intent to honour Tamil Nadu's Dravidian legacy across party lines.
