On August 27, during the afternoon sitting of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay left his customary separate chair near the Speaker's seat and sat in the front row alongside his Cabinet colleagues.
Under long-standing convention, the chief minister occupies a separate chair close to the Speaker's chair, while ministers sit in the front row according to seniority. Vijay sat between Leader of the House K.A. Sengottaiyan and Minister Aadhav Arjuna.
Such a shift by a sitting chief minister is believed to be unprecedented in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, and the gesture drew attention both inside the House and in subsequent news coverage.
