Political Journey
Seventeen years. One party. 108 seats. C. Joseph Vijay's political journey began with a flag — and ended with a mandate. From Vijay Makkal Iyakkam's first civic rallies in 2009 to being sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026, this is the arc of a movement built from the ground up.
The Vijay Makkal Iyakkam flag is unveiled, signalling the formal political mobilization of his fan network. A civic identity — distinct from cinema — begins to take shape.
Increased focus on governance: public criticism of the Citizenship Amendment Act, student outreach, Jallikattu revival advocacy, and championing Tamil as a medium of administration — issues that would later anchor TVK's cultural policy.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam officially launched with a '21st Century Good Governance' agenda: job guarantees, student stipends, education welfare, and clean administration. Cinema career formally concluded. The movement crystallises into electoral form.
Nationwide membership drive surpasses 15 million members by September 2025. Local and booth-level committees structured across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Vijay Vidyashiram student welfare schemes become TVK's most visible social infrastructure.
First massive state conference held in Vikravandi. Historic resolutions passed: Social Justice, Secularism, and Egalitarianism declared as TVK's ideological pillars. Periyar, Ambedkar, Kamaraj, Velu Nachiyar, and Anjalai Ammal named as intellectual mentors.
Vijay announces TVK will contest all 234 Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies independently — no pre-poll alliance. A calculated bet on the party's grassroots strength and the electorate's readiness for an alternative.
Election results: TVK emerges as the single largest party with 108 seats, breaking the decades-long DMK-AIADMK duopoly. Vijay wins both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East. TVK's victory in Kolathur — defeating the sitting Chief Minister in his own bastion — becomes the defining image of the night.
TVK+ coalition reaches 120 seats — crossing the majority mark of 118 — with support from Congress (5 seats), VCK, and others. Government formation confirmed.
C. Joseph Vijay sworn in as Chief Minister at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai. Governor R.V. Arlekar administers the oath. First non-Dravadian Chief Minister in 59 years. The title 'Thalapathy' — first given by fans, now earned through 80 million people's trust.
