Vijay Madhavan is an Indian classical dancer.
A disciple of Chitra Vishweshwaran, he was a child prodigy with an acumen for classical dance from a young age. He has visited many countries and has won many national and international awards.
He is also the JayaTV face icon of morning melody. Where he dances for the Bharathiyar song ‘senthamizh nadenum pothinilae’. He is a regular performer in Bhagavata Mela Natya Natakam and winner of Yuva Kala Bharti by Bharat Kalachar.
A dancer in the cast of the famous patriotic song “Senthamizh naadu”, a popular rendition by cine playback singers Chitra and Srinivas in the curtain raiser of Jaya TV. For more than a decade this telecast has been a connoisseurs’ delight with lush green landscape and Vijay in his warm yellow silk robe.
Vijay Madhavan is a noted soloist, versatile choreographer and reputed acharya in the art form of Bharathnatyam. Vijay’s fertile imagination has blossomed into several thematic group and solo productions. His intrinsic interest in the Hindu scriptures and music has enabled him in expressing nuances to a granular level in his presentation. Vijay is an integral part of Bhagavatha Mela (an ancient theatre art) tradition of Melattur, and his participation spans up to two and a half decades now. His cast as Bhoodevi in Prahlada Charitram, Krishna in Kamsa Charitram, Suruchi in Bhakta Druva Charitram, Mathanga Kanya in Harischandra has captivated the audience. As a vocalist in Carnatic music, he underwent systematic training with Swamimalai Sri S Janakiraman for more than two decades. As a dancer, he was a recipient ofSenior National Scholarship for dance in the years 1999-2001. He was awarded ‘The Best Dancer Award-1996’ by the Indian Fine Arts Society, ‘The Best Youth Award’ by VDS Arts Academy, ‘Yuva Kala Bharathi’ (All rounder award) by Bharat Kalachar, Chennai, ‘Nrutya Kala Bharathi’ by Samskara Bharathi, Hyderabad. He also received the Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari Endowment Award by the Narada Gana Sabha, and T Balasaraswathi Endowment Award by Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai. Vijay has featured with several legends in the field viz Sri Kelucharan Mahopatra, Dr.Padma Subramanyam, Ms Anita Ratnam, and Ms Meenakshi Seshadri. He has performed several duet shows with his guru Smt.Chitra Visweswaran. He is a regular feature in both the National and International Festivals of Dance. His commercial DVD ‘Bharatiyil Sanmatam’ harnessing the six cults of worship and the lyrics of great tamil poet Sri Subramanya Bharathiar, was applauded. He has toured several countries like the USA, UK, Germany, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia and Srilanka.
Vijay has been training several students in his institution ‘Rechita Nrutyalaya’ and have carved them to excel as soloists in the art form. Vijay imparted training for the physically challenged kids of MGR School for hearing and speech impaired, and made them perform during several occasions. Vijay continues to train the students at Sivananda Gurukulam for the Orphans at Katangkulathur. Vijay’s contribution for the fund raiser show at Singapore in the year 2011 for the cause of MINDS (Mentally and Intellectually Disabled of Singapore) was appreciated by the Dr Nathan (Mr.President) of Singapore.
